American Music Fest has a Handle on things

Luck is smiling down on Seven Handle Circus these days. A few weeks ago, the bluegrass band was playing a brunch in Atlanta when Mumford and Sons walked in.

The platinum-selling Englishmen liked what they heard and invited Seven Handle Circus to open for them that night at the Fox Theatre.

“We set up in the lobby there at the Fox and played to a huge crowd,” said lead singer Shawn Spencer. “The coolest thing was, after the show, we ended up in a three-hour bluegrass jam with them in their dressing room.”

Since then, the phone has been ringing off the hook with promoters trying to book the Atlanta group. This Sunday, they will play right before Patterson Hood in the third annual Classic City American Music Festival at The Melting Point.

Like many bands in the American Music Festival lineup, it’s unfair to pigeonhole Seven Handle Circus into one music genre. Spencer and his band are a bit bluegrass, a tad alt-country and even a bit folksy.

“We love the classics and standards of bluegrass, but we write and play something new,” Spencer said. “We love to take our music to the next level. It’s definitely high-energy. That’s always the goal.”

They share similar ideals with the Packway Handle Band, the group that helped start this festival. Once
