Dervish is a highly-acclaimed ensemble who has devoted many years to bringing new life into the traditional music of Irish folk. The band consists of Cathy Jordan (bodhran, bones), Shane Mitchell (accordion), Liam Kelly (flute, whistles), Michael Holmes (bouzouki), Brian McDonagh (mandola, mandolin, bouzouki), and Tom Morrow (fiddle, whistles). On this project, they selected a number of Celtic classics and infused them with their own arrangements.
Guest artists include Vince Gill, The SteelDrivers, Rhiannon Giddens, Steve Earle, and Abigail Washburn. Selections include familiar tunes such as “The Rambling Irishman” with Cathy Jordan, “There’s Whiskey In The Jar” with The SteelDrivers, “On Raglan Road” with Vince Gill, and “The Parting Glass” with Abigail Washburn. Other selections are “Molly Malone,” “The Rocky Road To Dublin,” “The Fields Of Athenry,” “Down By The Sally Gardens,” and “The West Coast Of Clare.” The CD package contains lyrics and song personnel, and the inside covers have extensive liner notes by Mick Moloney.
This is a great project for fans of Irish and Celtic music from one of the genre’s premier performers and interpreters. (Rounder Records, 1201 Demonbreun St, Ste. 600, Nashville, TN 37203, www.rounder.com.)BF
